Chapter 15

Guilt clawed its way through Actaeon, stifling his thoughts and squeezing the breath from his lungs. “No. Persephone wasn’t in Las Vegas. She wouldn’t place herself in a place with so many cameras.”

When Lexi pushed to her feet, her grimace stretched her face. She gasped and squeezed her eyes shut, holding her head with both hands. The air stilled, as if waiting for her to act. She focused on him. “She was. All three of us were. Dad was a blackjack dealer at The Luxor. Said it was best to hide in plain sight.”

The pain faded from her face as she spoke, replaced with fury. “And then you and that asshole lapdog of Zeus’—” She glanced at Cerberus. “No offense.”

“Some taken.” Cerberus reached for her.

She brushed his hand away with a scowl. “I’m fine.”

“I know it hurts.” Cerberus’ voice was kind. “But Persephone didn’t die. You’ve seen it. That’s why you’re here. This allowed her to return home, to sit on her throne in the underworld. Unless the soul is destroyed, it moves to a new plane of existence.”

Lexi turned a narrow-eyed glare on him. “A home she was shackled to even after she fell out of love with Hades. The place she ran from when she had the chance. Except, this time, she wasn’t taken with her body, so she’s a lot more bound to it than she was before. Don’t you dare fucking tell me this is for the best.”

“I’m not.”

Actaeon couldn’t listen to this. Not with his own thoughts assaulting him. How many others who were important to him, to her, to people he cared about had died? Not that it mattered. Everyone he killed, regardless of his intent, was important to someone. Guilt scooped out an empty cavern in his chest that he did this to Lexi, but it was a reminder of how many people his actions impacted.

This was his chance to witness the pain firsthand.

“And don’t you take his side.” She pointed to Actaeon. “He can topple buildings with a fucking bow and arrow. I’ve seen the video. He doesn’t need you to defend his actions.”

Cerberus shook his head. “I’m not. Trust me. One thing I won’t do is tell you Actaeon deserves understanding. But it’s not the end of the world.”

Any other day, and Actaeon would have snapped back with an insult. “Don’t celebrate Persephone’s death. You can’t honestly be trying to justify this. I did reckless, horrible things. Things that can’t be taken back.”

“Don’t you dare.” Lexi whirled on him and forced her words through clenched teeth. “You haven’t earned the right to wallow in self-pity over this.”

“That’s the last thing I’m doing.”

“That’s the only thing you’re doing. It’s the only thing you’ve done since it happened.” Venom dripped from her words.

“It’s guilt. I was wrong.” He couldn’t believe he was defending himself for hating his own actions. What was happening?

She slammed her palms into his chest and shoved him, catching him off guard. He stumbled back a step.

“You fucking asshole,” she spat.
